Junior High Curriculum
Science Department
Earth Science – God is glorified through our study of His creation using the Bob Jones curriculum. The four disciplines of earth science hydrosphere, lithosphere, celestial sphere, and atmosphere are covered in depth through hands-on learning, discussion, lectures and group learning. The goal is for the students to become clear thinkers as God glorifying scientists.
Life Science – God is exalted as the Creator in the Bob Jones Life Science curriculum. Studies include the difficult topics of genetics and moral issues facing our culture today. The spring semester contains weekly dissection labs.
History Department
US History – In a time where history revisionists are impacting this generation we strive to educate our students in an accurate history of our great nation. The Bob Jones Curriculum called History of the American Republic helps us in that goal. The settling of our nation through WWII is covered. Projects are part of the learning with an emphasis in public speaking.
World Studies – Understanding the history and culture of man enriches students understanding of our ever changing world. This class is a survey of His story, God’s heritage, world cultures (AD 1100 to present). Focus is built around geography, history, religion, governments, economics and culture.
Math Department
Fundamentals of Mathematics – Students excel as they systematically build on the skills of their elementary years. A solid review of numbers kicks off the book and chapter 14 concludes with Logic and Set Theory. Each of the 14 units contains connections to math in the real world.
Pre-Algebra – This study assumes that all basics are mastered and that the student is ready to begin Algebra. It is an excellent book to bridge one more year of mastery before taking Algebra I.
Algebra 1 – Language of algebra, solving equations, integers, real numbers, inequalities, relations, systems, polynomials, factoring, radicals, quadratic equations, rational functions, expressions and equations, probabilities and statistics. This is equivalent to high school algebra.
Geometry – For students who have mastered Algebra 1. This challenging program is for students who qualify through testing or instructor approval. Geometry can be transferred for High School credit to Summit’s High School or on the approval of the receiving high school.
Bible Department
OT Bible – the richness of the Old Testament is explored from the perspective of learning from the examples of others. The backdrop is always the greatness and faithfulness of our God. Students enter discussion and each lesson is tied to their daily lives. We want them to see God’s Word applies Monday – Saturday, not just on Sundays! Chapters of the Scripture are memorized to enrich seeing the Scriptures in context.
NT Bible Survey – This Bob Jones curriculum walks us through the life of Christ as it overviews the gospels. Then there is rich discussion as the letters are studied emphasizing what comfort God has brought to us through the gospel and then what a high calling that gospel has on how we are to live every day of our lives! Chapters of Scripture are memorized to enrich seeing the Scriptures in context.
English Department
Literature –Understanding Literature through thematic explorations.
Writing and Grammar –Sentence structure, parts of speech, mechanics are developed while learning to write with meaning and purpose through projects and essays.
Vocabulary and spelling -With emphasis on Latin prefixes and roots a wide variety of learning methods are utilized to build vocabulary and spelling skills.
Technology Department
History of technology and the systems leading to contemporary digital technology is reviewed. Foundational keyboarding skills are developed with basic understanding of operating systems and desktop applications. Microsoft Office applications, web page creation and publishing, graphic arts and moral and ethical issues are explored.
8th grade students expand their technology skills with digital photography, digital graphic arts and create the school yearbook.
Music Department
Band
Instrumental music is taught using most band instruments.
Choir
Vocal music is taught including sight reading, intonation, clarity, rhythm and breath control
Physical Education
Our physical education program is to give the students an opportunity to grow spiritually, improve their skill, enhance physical and mental abilities, enjoy fair play, increase knowledge, and develop an appreciation for a fit, active, and healthy lifestyles. The students will learn, participate, and compete in a number of games and sports, and develop physical fitness through strengthening and stretching programs.
